Parents visiting from India: what to look for in a home

For many of our Indian clients a home has to work for two households: the family that lives there all year, and parents who come over for a few months. These are the points we check during viewings.

• Stairs. Dutch staircases can be steep and narrow. Newer homes in Leidsche Rijn are usually better than older city homes. Look at handrails and at the height of the steps.
• A bedroom with a bathroom on the same floor. Ideal is a ground-floor room, or a first-floor bedroom next to the bathroom.
• Walking distance. A supermarket, a park bench, a bus stop. Parents who can go out on their own enjoy their stay far more.
• Heating per room. Visitors from a warm climate often want it warmer than you do. Underfloor heating with separate zones is a plus.
• Space to cook together. A kitchen where two people can work, with proper extraction.
